HMC Hosting Go Red for Women Event
Hopedale, IL – (January 24, 2008) Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s nationwide movement which celebrates the energy, passion and power women have to band together and wipe out heart disease. In support of this initiative, Hopedale Medical Complex is hosting a free Go Red for Women event on Monday, February 11 from 5:30pm – 8pm at Hopedale’s Commons East Grand Room. Blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings will be offered along with dinner, giveaways and a “Love Your Heart” presentation by Dr. Matthew Rossi, one of HMC’s board certified vascular surgeons. HMC employees will be wearing red on February 11 th in support of this initiative and we are encouraging attendees to do the same in support of this important initiative.
Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in America. But, the good news is living a healthy lifestyle, periodic check-ups and screenings can greatly improve chances for survival. Using the simple phrase "Love Your Heart," the Go Red for Women’s goal is to raise awareness of heart disease and educate everyone to improve their heart health in the fight against heart disease.
Matthew B. Rossi, M.D., FACA, FACS, a vascular surgeon with Midwest Vascular Institute at Hopedale Medical Complex will present on the mechanics of the heart, recommended diagnostic testing options to determine if you are at risk for heart disease, treatment options, heart healthy eating habits and making lifestyle choices that can decrease the risk of heart disease.
“Over half the women who suddenly died of cardiac arrest last year had no previous symptoms,” states Dr. Rossi. “It is so important for women to be educated on this major health concern.”
According to the American Heart Association:
- Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 3 killers of women over age 25.
- Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including stroke, claims nearly twice as many women’s lives than all forms of cancer.
- Overall, more women than men die of stroke each year.
- One in three women in the United States currently suffers from some form of cardiovascular disease.
