Learn The Facts Regarding Heart Attack and Stroke at HMC’s Health & Wellness Fair
Hopedale , IL — (April 10, 2008) Knowing the facts about cholesterol and how it can reduce your risk for a heart attack or stroke is important. But understanding what cholesterol is and how it affects your health are only the beginning. On Saturday, May 3 rd from 11:30am – 3:30pm at Hopedale’s Wellness Center, HMC will be hosting its annual Health & Wellness Fair – Helping Families Help Themselves. Free screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose are available along with a new screening for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) that was not offered last year.
“The goal for this year’s event is to provide free screenings, risk assessments, and educational information, along with connecting our community with health services information,” states Melodie Mendenhall, Director of Marketing. “The screenings and educational information will help people of all ages be proactive in taking the necessary steps to improve their health.”
Compelling evidence shows that the atherosclerotic process (buildup of fatty plaque in arteries) begins in childhood and progresses slowly into adulthood. Then it often leads to coronary heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. To keep your cholesterol under control, have your blood drawn at the Fair. A report will be sent to you and your physician with your cholesterol levels. Information will also be available on coronary heart disease.
In addition, high blood pressure is the single most important risk factor for stroke, which is the No. 3 cause of death among Americans. It is also a leading cause of serious, long-term disability. Many people mistakenly think of stroke as an "old person’s disease." But thousands of strokes occur each year in people under the age of age 65. HMC professionals will be available at the Fair for blood pressure checks.
You can protect yourself against stroke by knowing your risk factors, your blood pressure rate, the warning signs of stroke and what to do if you notice the warning signs. Quitting smoking is also important to reduce your overall risk for heart attack and stroke along with reducing fat (particularly saturated fat) in your diet, eating less salt, and changing your lifestyle by losing weight and getting regular physical activity. Hopedale’s dietitian will be on hand to answer any questions regarding a healthy diet and the Fair is an opportunity to take a tour of HMC’s Wellness Center.
As a reminder to participants, screenings are not intended to take the place of regular physical examinations, but are offered as an opportunity for individuals to learn more about their own health.
