May is National Better Sleep and Asthma and Allergy Month

Hopedale , IL — (April 24, 2008) Are you tired of feeling tired? Do you want to make a commitment to getting the sleep you need but don't know where to begin? Hopedale Wellness Center is sponsoring its 4 th Annual Health & Wellness Fair. Helping Families Help Themselves is a FREE event with over 40 businesses and community services and is scheduled for Saturday, May 3 from 11:30am – 3:30pm. This year’s Fair has something for everyone - from the young to the mature. Health screenings, drawings, giveaways and fun activities for children, including a children’s Usborne Book sale, will be offered along with medical helicopter displays, emergency vehicle demos and the announcement of the Athlete of the Year and the Hopedale Medical Complex Scholarship winners. Pork chop sandwiches, chips and drinks will be available for purchase from 11:30am – 2:30pm. Free screenings are available for sleep apnea and breathing disorders along with blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, skin cancer and peripheral arterial disease. HMC physicians are also available in our Medical Arts Physician office from 12-1pm for a full body skin cancer screening. A scheduled appointment is necessary and may be made by calling 309-449-4338.

HMC’s Sleep Disorders Center will be offering a free sleep risk assessment, which asks just a few simple questions. Our Sleep Center Director can determine whether further testing is needed. In addition, he will be available to give you suggestions on how to put yourself on a path to getting the sleep you need. Sleep affects all areas of life including your health, productivity, mood and safety. The Sleep Disorders Center will also offer a chance to win a sound therapy relaxation system.

Blow the Whistle on Asthma is the American Lung Association’s initiative to help fight asthma. Asthma isn’t always obvious, but is responsible for over 12 million lost school days in children and more than 14 million lost workdays for adults. Even more frightening is the fact that asthma can be fatal; nearly 4,000 deaths are attributed to asthma annually. It's a peak season for asthma and allergy sufferers, and a perfect time to help educate those who think they may have a breathing disorder. Spirometry is a device that can measure your lung capacity and this test will be offered by HMC’s Respiratory Department at the Fair, along with educational materials on asthma.

Activities for this year’s Health & Wellness Fair will help people of all ages be proactive in taking the necessary steps to improve their health. “The key is prevention”, states Melodie Mendenhall, Director of Marketing, “and the earlier that begins, the better the outcome.”

The Hopedale Wellness Center is located at 222 NW Grove Street in Hopedale. For more information on the Health & Wellness Fair or the Hopedale Wellness Center, call 309-449-4360.
