HMC Offering Free Skin Cancer Screens At This Year’s Health & Wellness Fair
Hopedale , IL – (April 17, 2008) There are two important words for skin cancer…EARLY DETECTION. Did you know that skin cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer? On Saturday, May 3 rd from 11:30am – 3:30pm at Hopedale’s Wellness Center, HMC will be hosting its annual Health & Wellness Fair – Helping Families Help Themselves. HMC physicians are available in our Medical Arts Physician office from 12-1pm for a full body skin cancer screening. A scheduled appointment is necessary and may be made by calling 309-449-4338.
Being sun smart and using sunscreen along with checking your skin once a month for suspicious moles or spots is one of the best ways to keep your skin healthy and cancer free.
There are five different types of skin cancer - actinic keratosis, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma and melanoma. Invasive melanoma is the sixth most common cancer in men and women and the second most common cancer in women 20-29 years of age.
At least once a year a person should have a clinical skin exam by a trained healthcare professional. If you have chronic sun exposure, are fair skinned, have blond or red hair and light eyes, you are more susceptible to skin cancer. Look for areas that have spots that are notched, ragged, irregular, growing larger and includes shades of brown or black with red, white or blue patches. If you have any of these characteristics or signs, schedule your appointment today!
In addition to the skin cancer screen, free screenings are available for sleep apnea and breathing disorders along with blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and peripheral arterial disease.
Educational material and risk assessments will include information on stroke, coronary heart disease, sleep apnea, diabetes, nutrition, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer and body mass index. In addition, there are drawings for prizes and giveaways.
For more information, call Hopedale’s Wellness Center at 309-449-4500.
